Which area is right for you

Ha Giang is Vietnam’s far-north frontier, and almost everyone comes for the Loop: a 3-4 day motorbike circuit through the Dong Van Karst Plateau. Accommodation follows the route, not a single town. You sleep one night in Ha Giang city before and after, then in village homestays at Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van or Meo Vac along the way.

Ha Giang city (start and end)

Ha Giang city is the loop’s launch pad, with guesthouses and budget hotels at about $10-30 a night, plus the bus station and motorbike rental shops. Most travellers sleep here the first and last night, sort a bike or an Easy Rider guide, and get the required permit. Book ahead in September to November, when the loop is busiest.

Village homestays on the loop

The real Ha Giang experience is the homestays: Quan Ba (near the Heaven’s Gate), Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac all have family-run stays at roughly $10-25 a night including dinner. Dong Van is the biggest stop, with a market and old quarter; Meo Vac sits above the spectacular Ma Pi Leng pass. Expect basic rooms, shared bathrooms and cold nights in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I sleep on the Ha Giang loop?

Most loops sleep in Ha Giang city, then Quan Ba or Yen Minh, then Dong Van, and sometimes Meo Vac, before returning. Village homestays cost about $10-25 a night with dinner, and booking through your Easy Rider or a tour agency is easiest.

Do I need a permit for Ha Giang?

Yes, foreign visitors need a Ha Giang travel permit, usually arranged by your homestay, rental shop or tour agency for a small fee. Carry your passport; checkpoints on the loop may ask to see it.

How much is accommodation on the Ha Giang loop?

Ha Giang city guesthouses run about $10-30 a night; village homestays $10-25 including a home-cooked dinner. Prices were checked October 2026 and are highest in the September to November high season.

Is the Ha Giang loop safe for beginners?

The roads are steep and busy with trucks and other riders, and many travellers join an Easy Rider tour with a local driver rather than self-driving. If you do ride yourself, get a reliable bike, ride in daylight only and never rush the passes.

When is the best time to do the Ha Giang loop?

September to November brings golden rice terraces and clear views, the most popular window. March to May is milder with blossom and fewer crowds; December to February is cold and foggy, and June to August is wet with a higher risk of landslides.
