Months at a glance
Northern Vietnam has three distinct seasons affecting Hanoi, Halong Bay and Sapa differently:
| Month | Weather | Highlights | Tourist density |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feb-Apr | Dry, mild | Golden Sapa terraces, Hanoi Tet Festival | Low-Mid |
| May-Jul | Hot, humid | Lotus flowers, rice planting | Low |
| Aug-Oct | Rainy, lush | Post-harvest green, Halong misty mornings | Mid-High |
| Nov-Jan | Cool, dry | Best Halong visibility, Sapa autumn colours | Peak |
Hanoi
Hanoi’s best weather is February to April and September to November: clear skies, comfortable 18-25°C mornings, comfortable sightseeing temperatures. July sees hot, humid 35°C days perfect for cooling river drinks.
Avoid January and early February for cooler 12-15°C temps and chance of drizzle.
Halong Bay
Halong Bay’s optimal window: October to April. Morning mists burn off by late morning, creating dreamy photos of limestone peaks. December to March is dry and clear; water is calm for kayaking.
Peak is November to December (weekends busy). Visit early morning (7-8am) to beat the tour buses.
Sapa
Best time for Sapa: September to November for autumn colours, March to May for spring blossoms. Rice terraces turn golden yellow; ethnic markets are in full swing.
Weather: cool mornings 10-18°C, afternoons 20-25°C. Rain decreases from October, making trekking easier than the muddy June-August peak.
Quick facts
- Top recommendation: September-November for all three areas
- 2nd best: March-May for Sapa, Halong clear days, fewer crowds
- Cheapest: June-August (lower hotel prices but rain)
- Avoid: December-February for very cool, sometimes foggy
Frequently asked questions
Why not visit Northern Vietnam in January?
January is cool (15-22°C), with morning fog and occasional drizzle. Halong Bay looks dramatic but can be misty. Sapa gets freezing mornings. Fewer tourists means lower prices and easier bookings.
Is Sapa or Halong better in October?
Sapa has golden rice terraces in October; Halong has calm waters and clear skies. It’s a trade-off. If you can, split 2 nights in each area.
Should I visit Ninh Binh in the same trip?
Yes, Ninh Binh (Tam Coc, Trang An) is close to Halong and works well as a day trip from Hanoi or stopover between Halong and Phong Nha. October-November is best for boating.
