Tam Coc

Tam Coc is the social hub: a strip of guesthouses, homestays and cafes between rice fields and karst, at roughly $15-60 a night. You can walk to boat rides, hire a bicycle and join a sunset viewpoint hike (Hang Mua) nearby. It is the best base for first-timers and solo travellers, and livelier in the evening than anywhere else in the province.

Trang An

Trang An sits near the UNESCO boat-dock area, with boutique homestays and bungalows at about $20-70 a night facing the water and cliffs. It is quieter and slightly more scenic than Tam Coc, great for couples and anyone wanting to be first on the boats in the morning. You still need a bicycle or Grab for restaurants in Tam Coc, about 10 minutes away.

Quick facts

  • Social & convenient: Tam Coc, $15-60 a night, walk to boats and cafes.

  • Do not miss: a Trang An or Tam Coc boat ride, and the Hang Mua viewpoint at sunrise.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Tam Coc or Trang An?

Stay in Tam Coc for cafes, hostels and easy boat access as a first-timer or solo traveller. Choose Trang An for quieter, more scenic bungalows near the UNESCO boat docks, especially for couples.

Is Ninh Binh worth staying overnight?

Yes. A day trip from Hanoi is rushed; staying one or two nights lets you do a boat ride, cycle the rice fields and climb the Hang Mua viewpoint at sunrise, when it is cool and uncrowded.

How much is a hotel in Ninh Binh per night?

Guesthouses and homestays in Tam Coc run about $15-40 a night; Trang An bungalows $20-70; the city is cheaper still. Prices were checked October 2026 and rise on weekends and public holidays.

How do I get to Ninh Binh from Hanoi?

A bus or train takes about 2 hours from Hanoi, and many homestays arrange pickup. It also makes a good stop between Hanoi and Hue, since the reunification train passes through Ninh Binh.

When is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?

February to April and October to November: mild, dry and best for boating and cycling. May to September is hot and humid with heavy rain that can briefly close boat docks; December to January is cool and often misty.
