The three options
Vietnam now has excellent coverage on 4G/LTE networks (Viettel, Vinaphone, Mobifone). Three main ways to get data:
| Option | Price (USD) | Data | Speed | Convenience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo eSIM | $4-15 | 1-10GB | 4G LTE | Install before travel, no store visit |
| Local SIM (phone shop) | $2-10 | 5-50GB | 4G LTE | Buy at airport/3G store, requires passport |
| Physical SIM card | $5-20 | 5-50GB | 4G LTE | Airport kiosk, instant activation, can keep number |
Airalo eSIM comparison
- Vietnam Travel Pack: 1GB for $4.50 (7 days), 3GB for $8, 5GB for $12
- Unlim Viet Nam: 15GB for $20 (30 days)
- Works before arrival: Install via QR code on phone, set up immediately
- Coverage: Viettel and Vinaphone networks
- Limitation: Can’t call local numbers, need separate Vietnamese phone number for SMS verification
Local SIM card at airport
- Viettel: Best coverage, most reliable in mountains/countryside
- Vinaphone/Mobifone: Good in cities, slightly weaker in north
- Price: 10GB for 100,000 VND ($4) or 30GB for 150,000 VND ($6)
- What you get: SIM card, 10-50GB data, validity 30 days
- Process: Show passport at counter, pay cash, ask for Vietnamese number
Physical SIM vs eSIM
Get physical SIM at the airport if you need Vietnamese phone number for ride-hailing (Grab), Airbnb/Booking confirmations, or local bank account. Most travellers prefer a physical SIM for convenience.
Use eSIM only if you want to avoid paperwork or keep your home number for SMS verification.
Quick facts
- Cheapest: Local SIM 10GB for $4 (airport or 3G street store)
- Convenient: Airalo eSIM delivered to phone before travel
- Best coverage: Viettel network across Vietnam
- Keep number: Physical SIM lets you keep the number after trip
Frequently asked questions
Is Vietnam 5G available with eSIM?
Limited. 5G rollout is still early, mainly in Hanoi and HCMC CBD areas. Both eSIM and physical SIM work on 4G LTE which is fast enough for maps, video and uploads.
Can I top up my eSIM data after using it?
No. eSIM data packages are one-time use. Buy a new package when the old one expires. Local SIM can be topped up at convenience stores.
Do I need to register my phone number?
Yes, Vietnamese authorities require SIM registration with passport. This applies to both eSIM and physical SIM. Police may ask for ID if you can’t show matching passport.
What happens if my eSIM doesn’t work in Vietnam?
Very rare. If it doesn’t work, buy a local SIM at the airport (10-15 minutes) or a 3G street store. Keep your old data active on roaming plan as backup.
