Ho Chi Minh City

HCMC is best from December to April – dry, 25-32°C, ideal for exploring District 1, Cu Chi and the city’s food scene. May-Oct brings heat and humidity (35-40°C). November can be rainy but less crowded.

Mekong Delta

December to April is the best time for Mekong boat tours: Calm waters, clear skies, morning cánh đàn lợn (duck) sightings. The Delta turns vivid green during the dry season.

Rainy season (May-Nov) has lush landscapes but boat tours risk delays due to flooding. Book tours with flexible cancellation policies.

Phu Quoc

November to March is Phu Quoc’s dry season – perfect for beach lounging, snorkeling and island hopping. The sea is calm and visibility is high for diving (7-15m visibility).

March-May sees warming water (28-31°C) and growing crowds. June-August is wet season with daily rain and occasional cancellations.

Quick facts

  • Top recommendation: February-April for all South Vietnam highlights

  • Flood periods: May-October in Mekong; November in Phu Quoc

Frequently asked questions

Why is January the cheapest month in Southern Vietnam?

January falls between north and south peak seasons, making hotel prices lower. HCMC sees fewer tourists (local Tet holiday is in January/February lunar calendar, not fixed Gregorian). Mekong Delta is quiet except for holiday locals.

Is Phu Quoc worth visiting in July?

July is within the rainy season but Phu Quoc’s microclimate gives it some protection. Expect afternoon showers, but mornings can be sunny. Beach time is unpredictable; island hopping may be cancelled. For certainty, visit December-April.

Should I visit Mekong before or after Tet?

Before Tet (January-February) has fewer holiday crowds but some attractions may close for the New Year holiday. After Tet (March-April) opens fully but prices rise. For balance, aim for late January or early March.
