Self-drive or Easy Rider on the Ha Giang loop? Compare cost, safety, route and how to book a 3-4 day northern Vietnam trip.

3 min read Northern Vietnam

The Ha Giang loop is a 3-4 day motorbike circuit through Vietnam's most dramatic mountain scenery. The classic question is whether to ride yourself or sit behind a local "Easy Rider" guide. Self-driving gives total freedom but demands real motorbike experience and confidence on steep, truck-heavy passes. An Easy Rider tour costs more but is safer, comes with local knowledge and lets you enjoy the view without white knuckles.

Self-drive vs Easy Rider

The Ha Giang loop is a 3-4 day motorbike circuit through Vietnam’s most dramatic mountain scenery. The classic question is whether to ride yourself or sit behind a local “Easy Rider” guide. Self-driving gives total freedom but demands real motorbike experience and confidence on steep, truck-heavy passes. An Easy Rider tour costs more but is safer, comes with local knowledge and lets you enjoy the view without white knuckles.

The route

Most loops run Ha Giang city, Quan Ba (Heaven’s Gate), Yen Minh, Dong Van, the Ma Pi Leng pass and Meo Vac, then back via Du Gia. Three days is the minimum; four is comfortable and lets you add the Lung Khuy cave and Du Gia waterfalls. You will need a Ha Giang travel permit, arranged by your host or tour, and your passport at checkpoints.

Cost and booking

A self-drive loop with a rented bike and homestays runs roughly $90-150 for 3-4 days. An Easy Rider tour with a driver-guide, bike, meals, homestays and permit runs about $200-350. Book through a reputable Ha Giang operator, confirm what is included (fuel, permit, insurance) and choose a bike you can handle — or a driver you trust.

Quick facts

  • Self-drive: most freedom, needs experience; about $90-150 for 3-4 days.
  • Easy Rider: driver-guide, safer and easier; about $200-350 all-in.
  • Permit: required for foreigners; hosts and tours arrange it.
  • Route: Ha Giang — Quan Ba — Dong Van — Ma Pi Leng — Meo Vac.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ha Giang loop safe to self-drive?

Only if you are an experienced rider. The passes are steep, narrow and shared with trucks, and crashes happen. Beginners are strongly advised to take an Easy Rider tour with a local driver, which is the safer and still rewarding option.

How much does the Ha Giang loop cost?

A self-drive loop with a rented bike and homestays runs about $90-150 for 3-4 days. An Easy Rider tour with a driver-guide, bike, meals, homestays and permit runs about $200-350. Prices were checked October 2026 and are higher in the September to November high season.

How many days do I need for the Ha Giang loop?

Three days is the minimum to complete the classic circuit; four days is more comfortable and lets you add Du Gia and the Lung Khuy cave. Add a buffer day for weather, since fog and rain can slow the passes.

Do I need a licence or permit for the Ha Giang loop?

Foreigners need a Ha Giang travel permit (arranged by your host or tour) and your passport for checkpoints. Riding legally requires a Vietnamese licence or an IDP covering motorbikes, though enforcement varies — check current rules and your travel insurance.

When is the best time to do the Ha Giang loop?

September to November for golden rice terraces and clear skies, the peak window. March to May is milder with blossom and fewer crowds. December to February is cold and foggy, and June to August is wet with landslide risk.
