Which area is right for you
Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) is a city of districts, and the one you pick shapes your whole trip. First-timers usually want District 1 for the walkable landmarks and nightlife; repeat visitors and longer stays often prefer District 3 for local cafes and lower prices; expats and families head to Thao Dien in District 2 for space and international schools. The airport is 20-30 minutes from all three depending on traffic.
District 1 (Ben Thanh, Dong Khoi & Bui Vien)
District 1 puts the Notre-Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office, Ben Thanh Market, the Reunification Palace and the Bui Vien backpacker street within walking distance. Mid-range hotels run about $30-70 a night, dorms $10-20 a bed. It is the most convenient base and also the busiest: Bui Vien stays loud past 2 am, so light sleepers should look toward Dong Khoi or the riverside instead.
District 3
Just north-west of District 1, District 3 is where locals actually eat and drink. The area around Vo Van Tan and Nguyen Dinh Chieu has specialty coffee, banh mi and quieter streets, with hotels at roughly $25-50 a night. It is a 10-15 minute Grab ride from the District 1 landmarks, making it good value for longer stays and repeat visitors who do not need to be on top of the tourist sights.
Thao Dien (District 2)
Thao Dien, across the Saigon River in District 2, is the expat and family quarter: international restaurants, bakeries, gyms and serviced apartments with pools at roughly $50-120 a night. It is greener and calmer than the centre, but you will rely on Grab for everything, and the ride into District 1 takes 20-30 minutes in peak traffic. It suits families, business travellers and stays of a week or more.

Frequently asked questions
Where should a first-timer stay in Ho Chi Minh City?
District 1 for a first visit: the cathedral, post office, Ben Thanh Market and Bui Vien nightlife are all walkable, and mid-range hotels run about $30-70 a night. If you sleep early, avoid Bui Vien and pick a hotel toward Dong Khoi or the riverside instead.
Is it safe to stay in the Bui Vien backpacker area?
Yes, it is busy and well-lit, so it is safe for solo travellers, but it is very loud past 2 am and crowded for families. Watch your phone and bag against drive-by snatching on the street, a risk anywhere in central Saigon, not just Bui Vien.
How much is a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City per night?
Dorms cost $10-20 a bed; District 1 mid-range hotels $30-70; District 3 $25-50; Thao Dien serviced apartments $50-120. Prices were checked October 2026 and peak during the December to April dry season.
Should I stay in District 1 or Thao Dien?
Stay in District 1 for a short first trip when you want to walk to the sights and nightlife. Choose Thao Dien for families, business or stays of a week or more, when pools, international food and quieter streets are worth the 20-30 minute Grab ride into the centre.
When is the best time to visit Ho Chi Minh City?
December to April is the dry season and the best time to visit, with warm days and little rain. May to November is the wet season: short heavy afternoon downpours are common, but mornings are usually clear and hotel prices are lower.
